Exploring American Community Survey Data PDF Print E-mail

Date: Thursday, March 17, 2011

Description:

In December of 2010, the Census Bureau released the 2005-2009 5-year American Community Survey (ACS) estimates.  Although the ACS is NOT the same as the 2010 Census, this was the first time since the 2000 Census that the Census Bureau released extensive demographic information (on topics such as housing cost, income, and educational attainment) at the tract and block group level.  In other words, the ACS allows community development professionals to take a fresh look at the characteristics of people living in their service areas.

The first half of this group training will review what the ACS is, how it is different from the Census, and where to access the data online for free.  However, how you access the ACS data is less important than how you use the information once you have it.  Therefore, the second half of the group training will consist of a guided discussion about what the ACS data tells us about St. Louis CDC service areas.  Group training participants will receive a “mini-report” showing select ACS data for their approximate service areas.  Participants and facilitators will then collaborate to answer questions such as: “What, if anything, does the ACS data teach you about your service area that you weren’t previously aware of?” and “How can ACS data inform and support your day-to-day efforts?”

RHCDA is Regional Housing and Community Development Alliance, a nonprofit organization that creates and supports the alliances that make smart, sustainable neighborhood revitalization possible in the St. Louis region.

"We are really glad to have RHCDA as a resource.  We truly value their experience and commitment to foster redevelopment in our city, especially in neighborhoods that would not otherwise receive the financing or the support to make it happen on their own."

- Barbara Geisman, Executive Director for Development, Office of the Mayor, City of St. Louis
