First Buildings Completed in Crown Square

Crown Square is part of the ongoing "Crown Village" revitalization initiative RHCDA is undertaking in collaboration with the Old North St. Louis Restoration Group. The project involves the historic rehab of 27 buildings located on the former 14th Street pedestrian mall and the blocks surrounding it into 80 mixed-income lofts, live-work spaces, townhouses and apartments; and upwards of 34,000 square feet of street level commercial space. Construction started in mid-August of 2007 and has been proceeding at an impressive pace since.
Prior to commencement all of the project buildings were severely deteriorated; a reflection of the years of disinvestment in the City's near north side. Today the beginnings of a dramatic transformation are evident. Progress to date offers an early look at the impact that this large scale revitalization effort is certain to have. Four buildings on Warren Street, which forms the southern boundary of the former pedestrian mall, are nearing completion. These four residential buildings will soon be occupied. They provide a solid example of the quality and attention to historic detail that is embodied in the Crown Square development.
The coming months are sure to be an exciting time for the neighborhood and everyone involved or interested in the Crown Village revitalization. Construction on Crown Square will continue at an aggressive pace as more historic buildings are restored to their original grandeur. A comprehensive streetscape program will re-open the streets and turn the failed pedestrian mall into a unique, mixed-use urban district. The area is destined to become a long-term neighborhood anchor, the "town center" that brings new vitality to up and coming Old North St. Louis.
